the value of demos, even when bored

Mon Sep 14, 2009, 9:25 AM
This weekend's watercolor demo at a local art store turned into an hour-long examination of various ways to make grass. Only slightly more interesting than watching the grass actually grow, but on the other hand, it's good to be talking and thinking about making art in general, which I haven't been doing lately.

That last pastel drawing sat on my easel for a long time before I finally threw my hands up and put it away. I think it's time for me to go back to making art in a constrained time period -- like when I made that series of watercolor sketches that I'd complete before the baby got up from her nap. It forces me to be more impressionistic, which I like a lot. I'd like more of that in my personal style, but I keep getting bogged down in unnecessary detail. Kind of like my life.

Impressionistic watercolors make extremely good use of the media. I'm not sure that trying to do impressionistic pastels is necessarily working against my tools, but it's not as straightforward, at least.

Journal History

deviantID

I have a toddler and I'm her full-time caregiver, so I haven't the foggiest idea when I'm going to find time to do art.

I'm a traditional-media artist on the lam from a career in software engineering.

I start things and I don't finish.

I have an eerie talent for helping people realize their dreams.

I'm a radical feminist, which probably doesn't mean what you think it does.
